The forward roll or "mae ukemi" in aikido practice is one of the most fundamental movements to learn as a beginner on your first day of training. It is important not only to learn to protect yourself during the application of a technique were doing a forward roll will allow you to exit the encounter recovering your balance by standing up into ready position or "kamae" right away. But also "mae ukemi" properly executed is a phenomenal exercise to understand "circular motion" and from there your mind will follow.
